Winter surfing in Estonia
August 15, 2019
Estonia has a history of winter surfing for almost 50 years. Probably one of the first sailskis was invented here. You can read brief history of Estonian sailskis at the page of Estonian Surfing Association.
The popularity of the winter surfing in Estonia has been changing. At some winters, we have many racers in local competitions, some years not so many. The most popular discipline here is still windsurfing, recent years more in the iceboards (hi-boards) than in the skis. Versatile iceboards are usable on course race but absolutely necessary for slalom races.
Estonia has been hosting winter surfing events many times during the years. WISSA has been here at 1991, 1996, 2003, 2007 and 2016. Last year, 2019, we hold Winter Surfing Europeans with unusually huge feet in sled class, including many youngsters.
